Veteran's_DAy_007.jpgVeteran’s Day Article by Julia Dean and Mikaela Hartsfield

On November 11, the Midwest Central had the day off in honor of America’s veterans. On November 10, the middle school gathered in the gym to honor our own veteran, Mr. Stallings, our school custodian. Mr. Stallings lead us in the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Courtney Gillenwater made a poster, and Thomas Calloway painted a pumpkin to honor Mr. Stallings; he was presented with these and a gift card from the faculty. Mr. Stallings was a Prisoner of War while he served in the Vietnam War. Our custodian was also honored at the Green Valley Memorial Service along with other veterans. Thank you to all servicemen and women for your service!

About Me Bag by Matthew Sondag and Nora Richardson

A new reading project has started in seventh grade Mrs. Harrison’s class. This new project focuses on biographies and autobiographies. The students chose a biography to read and write about. For the project they will be doing an “About Me Bag.” This project requires a bag, with the chosen person’s name and picture presented on the front. Inside the bag will be five pictures or objects that relate to the individual they read about. Each item has a paragraph of why it is symbolic to their chosen person’s life. The project’s due date is Monday, December 13th. The biographies stretched from publicity to presidency, each biography being a little different from the next.

Last week was American Education Week (AEW) throughout the United States. This is the eighty-ninth American Education Week. AEW always comes the week before Thanksgiving even though the first AEW was the week of December 4-10th in 1921. AEW started in 1921 by the NEA representative in Des Moines, Iowa. We celebrate this week to spotlight education in our public schools. This is a very special week to educators everywhere.

Health Drug Project by Dalton Richardson and Eli Sanchez

This week the Midwest Central seventh graders will be working in small, individual groups on a drug project. Each group will be assigned a certain illegal or legal drug to research. They will go to the computer lab to research the drug online. Each group will have to create a visual prop or poster of their drug. They will have three days to work on the presentation. The groups will be presenting in front of their fellow classmates. This will be a good experience for the students because they will need to know what is dangerous about some of these drugs. By researching their drug the student with the assigned drug will learn a bit about its dangers. We hope the students will learn to avoid these drugs and learn a bit in the process.
